Ive still got a song to sing and there is music yet to play / Hello tomorrow, goodbye yesterday. For country crossover artist Amber Rhodes, the lyrics in Goodbye Yesterday, the title track of her debut album, reflect the simple and profound power in moving forward, with head held high, through the joys and challenges of daily life. As the twenty-five year old Lexington, KY native explains, Part of the symbolism of that title to me is saying goodbye to who I once was and hello to who I now am and to the person I am still to become. Amber Rhodes discovered her passion for performing as a small child, but it wasnt until years later that she began to explore her gift for songwriting. After moving to New York City in her late teens to pursue her career, Ambers writing exploded. And, in fact, she wrote or co-wrote (with songwriter Hugh Colocott) each of the seven songs on the EP including the rockin Burn and the stunning piano ballad, Return Again, which is about the changes that time can bring to a friendship. I wanted the CD to have every span of emotion. I wanted love. I wanted loss, betrayal, triumph, perseverance. . . I wanted it all. Influenced by her country music roots, Amber Rhodes considers herself first and foremost a storyteller. I like to give people visuals. Country music is all about the stories. Some country songs are darn right ugly, but you love them because they tell such great stories. So, growing up with that is what established my writing style. However, the attitude that is in the writing style is completely New York, Rhodes adds with a chuckle and her tongue firmly implanted in her cheek. As the path of any artist has many twists and turns, the completion of the album Goodbye Yesterday holds a special significance. As Rhodes explains, Instead of it being like a tangible object from dream to reality, its more like a medal, like a trophy of success and hard work. Its the greatest reward ever. Grammy Award-winning engineers / producers Erik Steinert and Axel Niehaus of Stray Dog Music have been instrumental in the cultivation of Rhodes music. I have grown into my craft and they were the water that helped me grow. They have been crucial in my growing process. A particular milestone in Rhodes career was the making of the music video for Goodnight Lullaby. Filmed on a 175-acre farm in Margaretville, NY, the video was directed by photographer Maura McEvoy, whose credits include the album cover for Shania Twains Greatest Hits. It was a real blessing to have met her and to have gotten to work with her. She was very open to any ideas I had. Standing firmly upon the foundation shes built stepping stone by stepping stone through sheer determination and will, Amber Rhodes has her gaze fixed steadfastly upon the future--- and all that she can bring to it. I define success as living within yourself a happy and fulfilled life and affecting other people in that way. Who knows what tomorrow brings / Id like to think great many things / Im telling you, listen up my friends / Its your life, its in your hands, Take from it all that you can. And as for Rhodes, she is indeed doing just that.
